Breaking: AG Holder cleared in Justice gunwalking probe

(CBS News) The Justice Department's inspector general cleared Attorney General Eric Holder and his top deputies Wednesday of knowing about the gunwalking operation known as Fast and Furious that allowed thousands of weapons to cross into Mexico.

Two of those weapons turned up at the scene where Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry was killed during a shootout in 2010 with drug traffickers.

While the inspector general put most of the blame for Fast and Furious on investigators in Phoenix, one senior official, Jason Weinstein, is blamed for not acting to stop the tactics.

Weinstein resigned Tuesday night. His lawyer told CBS Radio News that the report was badly flawed.

Quinnpac/NY Times Presidential Poll (Swing States)
Here are some highlights:

--The race is tight in Colorado, while President Barack Obama has the edge over Mitt Romney in Virginia and Wisconsin.

COLORADO
Now: Obama 48%, Romney 47%
August: Obama 45%, Romney 50%

VIRGINIA
Now: Obama 50%, Romney 46%
August: Obama 49%, Romney 45%

WISCONSIN
Now: Obama 51%, Romney 45%
August 23: Obama 49%, Romney 47%
August 8: Obama 51%, Romney 45%

-- A month ago, Romney led on handling the economy in all three states, but the President has cut into those leads and the two candidates are now running much closer on this measure.

--In the aftermath of events in Libya and the Middle East, President Obama has the advantage on managing an international crisis and has the edge on national security in Virginia and Wisconsin.

--While pluralities view Barack Obama’s policies as favoring the middle class, in all three states most voters see Mitt Romney’s policies as benefiting the rich.

--The gender gap remains: men support Romney and women support Mr. Obama.  The President maintains his lead among younger voters, and has pulled ahead among senior voters in Wisconsin.  White voters without a college degree continue to support Romney in all three states. Independents back Romney in Virginia and Wisconsin, but are more divided in Colorado.

University of Texas evacuates buildings, citing threats

Today is another example of the importance of social media.  The University of Texas was evacuated earlier today due to bomb threats.  However, many students/faculty members did not receive word through the University's official crisis alert system.

Officials report that all buildings at the University of Texas at Austin have been evacuated "due to threats on campus," according to an alert on the university's website Friday.

"Immediately evacuate ALL buildings and get as far away as possible. More information to come," a notice on the school's online emergency page and its Twitter feed said.

UT shuttle service will resume as soon as a safe staging point is identified.
