New Thursday: SA-area coach lands Leander HC job

After much anticipation, Leander will name former San Antonio-Stevens head coach Lee Bridges as Clint Harper's replacement.  Bridges' Falcons went 1-9 during 2012 season, but made State quarterfinals in 2010.

The Lions averaged 34 points/game, and allowed less than 12 points/game before falling in the final seconds of regional final vs. CC-Flour Bluff (heartbreaking video below).

Things can change with a new coaching staff, but here is what our Lions return with from 2012:

DL - Michael Epley ('14) Teams lead retrurning tackler (79), 4 sacks.  Third on team with tackles for loss, 2 fumble recoveries

QB - Brandon Hopp ('15) 118 QB rating with limited playing time.  7 TD and 2 picks, looks like a two-year starter

RB - Darian McClatcher ('15) second on team in rush yards (600) with potential for much more.

DB - Greg Kelley ('14) lead returning defensive backfield tackler (70 tackles), 4 sacks

DB - Zach Noska ('14) lockdown corner (8 pass deflections, 2 interceptions)

DB/LB - Martin Nwakamma ('14) 3 interceptions, averaged 6 tackles/game, 10 TFLs

RB - Ricky Piron ('14) over 200 rush yards and 3 TDs for a player who could breakout in 2013

WR - Reece Richey ('14), Michael Lacaros ('14) - both had production limited by heavy run game, but can make plays

OL - James Torres ('15) selected first team all-district in 2012
LB - Jacob Tetreault ('14) quietly notched 30 tackles, will room for more in '13

SUPER SOPHOMORES: Brian Love, Jacob Hannawalt, Dave Alfaro, Angel Perez - all four capable of eventual big contributions

Rumor Mill: Bastrop's Perry Reportedly Out
Sources report that Bastrop Football head coach Gerald Perry will not return in 2013.   Reports say the football team was informed on Monday afternoon, with current defensive coordinator Todd Patton being named interim.
The Bears finished 3-7 oveall, 2-5 in district in 2012.  Back-to-back  wins vs. East View (54-20) and Cedar Creek (71-7) rose optimism about the program to start district play.  The team lost a first half lead to Hutto the following week, and dropped the next four contests - being held scoreless vs. Connally and Elgin.
Patton is a former defensive back coach at Vista Ridge High School, with a son (Tyler) playing football for Kansas University.  He was the defensive coordinator for the Bears in 2012 - with prior stripes at Austin Reagan, North Dallas and DeSoto.

Coach Perry did a good job of getting his younger players quality time of Varsity last season.  There are several athletes returning that gives the Bears a legit shot at making the postseason.  Doing so with 8 teams in 17-4A will be one of the tougher tasks to pull off - but the following players (combined with others) could spark a return to the playoffs.

ATH - Wyatt Pearson ('14) - Top QB in Elgin as Freshman before transferring to Bastrop.  Showed potential with 3 TD/100 plus yard game v. Cedar Creek.

DB - Romello Wilson ('14) - underrated safety, trailed only Casey Waites for team lead in tackles (67)

RB - Iziayah Washington ('15) - capable of producer on ground and through the air, totaling 4 TDs in 2012

ATH - Logan Allen ('14) - Versatile athlete that can excel at several positions.  In '12, led team in receptions (20) and TD catches (2).

RB - Mason Homeley ('15) - deceptively strong rusher, dual athelte (baseball), 2nd on team in rush yards in '12

LB - Masta Hicks ('15) - sturdy player that could help anchor Bears defense, 52 total tackles. 18 TFL in '12
LB - Carrington Waites ('15) - showed promise in limited playing time last year, avg. 5 tackles/game

DL - Rene Loya ('16) - early favorite for Sophomore of the Year in '13, played Varsity as true Frosh i '12

OL - Gilbert Longoria ('14) and Darren Moore ('14) - they'll need to be at their best to help the Bears excel.
