The new Cen-Tex North for 2012 is filled with beast. The district losses Georgetown/Leander, but gains Hendrickson and newly opened Cedar Ridge. The teams that fail to make the '12 postseason will suffer a let down. Three teams will be in the dumps come Week Ten 2012. Listed below are programs making up District 16-5A over the next two years. Click links for Fanstand's team roster projections (written in early 2012). We've also designated a specific player that could have a huge influence on the team's success. No pressure.
McNeil - Its not going to be easy for the McNeil Mavericks, who lose a talented senior class. I'm not certain who will emerge at QB. Whomever gets the job, WR Ryan Murphy will make things easier on him. His ability to take a screen pass to the house could be paramount for a young passing attack.
Westwood - What hasn't been said about Westwood QB Bear Fennimore. Yes, he is named after the famed Alabama University coach, Bear Bryant. But that's just part of the story. For every bit of special that Ben Johnson was, its scary to think that Bear could top The Commander.
Hendrickson - Combine the loss of some talented seniors (Daje Johnson, Victor Irokansi) with a jump to 5A, and the Hawks have a tough task ahead. And while Leshaur Davis/Jailen Prince/Lane Griggs loom in the wings, the re-emergence of RB Samaje Perine makes the Hawks a fave to win every game.
Round Rock - How do you soften the loss of receivers like Khalyph Smith/Cole Thoms? You toss in a healthy Sam Lawliss for a full season. Lawliss may line up at RB as well - and will be a valued crutch for projected first year starter, QB Tyler Gerds.
Cedar Ridge - Juwon Cannon, swag. The littel brother of tenacious McCallum DL Kris Cannon - Juwon may be the best athlete in the family. The Raiders have lofty expectations as a first year program, and will need Cannon to be at his best in 2012.
Pffugerville - There's not a harder worker in the Austin-area. Adrian Dilworth is destined for great things, with the Panthers benefiting from his high school pitstop. Even with Hendrickson's Perine joining Adrian's district, we rank #21 as the top running back in 16-5A.
Stony Point - DB Wesley Moore has put up the kind of numbers that the top players dream of. Funny thing is, he still has another year of Varsity production ahead. Teammate Marcos Curry may be the district's best linebacker, but Moore is undoubtedly the best defensive back in Austin-area 5A football.
