Lake Travis SQT Preview: Pool B (revised)

Updated 12:28 P.M. Westwood has decided to forgo this weekend's SQT.  The Warriors clinched a State tourney berth last weekend with a win over Lake Travis.  They will be replaced by coach Wade Griffin's Elgin Wildcats.

We'll see two teams in their first Summer 7 on 7 action (Bowie, Rouse) along with pesky Copperas Cove.  Elgin (17-4A) makes a late sub for Westwood.  Check out our preview of Pool B, which starts at 9am on Lake Travis' half field/baseball field.   If you'd like a look at the entire bracket, click here.

Westwood Warriors***Westwood Warriors - NO LONGER IN TOURNAMENT, CLINCHED LAST WEEK
Winning last week's SQT was important for the Warriors.  It showed that the passing game won't miss a beat as Bear Fenimore takes the torch from UT-bound Ben Johnson.

Rouse Raiders FootballRouse Raiders
No longer the kids on the block, the Raiders are ready for the next step.  This is the first time we'll get to see Rouse in an SQT environment.  QB Justin Pelt looks like he could be a season-long starter.  A bump up in competition will help Pelt get on the same page as his talented receivers.  There is no lack of skill depth for Rouse.  Youngsters Andre Alger and Billy Ray McCrary are looking to put their names on the map.  WR Wesley Lewis returns as one of the area's best.  Jordan Vise, Chris Hendricks and Avery Schieffer will get a chance to hone their cover skills.  The pride level is high for Raider Nation, and we expect Rouse to exhibit a good fight.  They pull the Elgin Wildcats at 9am, followed by Bowie during 10am's session.

Bowie BulldogsBowie Bulldogs
After an intense Spring camp by Coach Jeff Ables, it was best for the Bulldogs to sit last week's SQT out.  Healed from sunburns and bruises, Bowie participates in this weekend's state qualifier.  The post-Robbie Dickey Era is in the hands of Dontae Harris.  Bryson Hoskins, Tyler Walker, Wesley Higgins and several other skill players will be on display.  Bowie will start the days vs. Cove at 9am, with Rouse lined up for the 10am game.

Elgin Wildcats FootballElgin Wildcats
It was this time last year when we first saw Elgin QB Ty'Rel Simmons taking snaps.  No longer under the radar, the returning junior is a preseason 17-4A MVP candidate.  The graduation of Geno Perez and Charlston Matthews will leave questionmarks, but the Wildcats won't be denied.  After starting the season 4-0 in 2011, Elgin's only win was via a hail mary vs. Bastrop.  They're ready to make amends, starting with this weekend's late entry to Lake Travis's SQT.   We'll get our first look at the Snell Brothers and the Nash Brothers.  Elgin will play Rouse to open at 9am, followed by Copperas Cove at 10am.

Eastside Memorial PanthersCopperas Cove Bulldogs
Cove beat Cedar Ridge 28-25 in last week's SQT, but couldn't trump Hendrickson to earn the semi-final trip.  It'll be a matchup of Bulldogs in the 9am game, as Copperas battles Bowie.  They'll tussle with Elgin at 10am.

POOL B Predictions: We feel Rouse could surprise casual fans and emerge from this pool.  The Raiders are certainly pumped for the the opportunity.  Bowie clinched a College Station trip last year, and will be the obvious favorite to make the semifinals.  Cove ended last weekend well, and carries the most momentum.

Traversing Central Texas at the speed of light to cover high school football doesn't come without a price.  We'd like to send a very special thanks to Next Care - Urgent Care, our new presenting sponsor.   Like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter.  We're Austin's Friday Night Fanstand!
