Lake Travis SQT Preview: Pool D

Pool D features three of the area's best 4A teams (Cedar Park, McCallum, Dripping Springs) and 5A Stony Point.  This will be the Knights and Tigers first State Qualifying Tournament (SQT) of the year.  Check out our brief preview of the Pool Below.  Action starts 9am on Lake Travis' upper practice fields.

Stony Point TigersStony Point Tigers

The Tigers have no lack of talent.  Their success will be dictated by everyone getting on the same page.  The Tigers beat Temple in their first match last weekend (19-14), but fell to Lake Travis.  The Tigers matchup with the Cavs could foreshadow a 2012 postseason first round game.  Stony ran mostly with Aidan Barrera at QB, but Damian Lindley saw some time behind center.  Lindley's gotten taller since last year.  Jordan Smith, another Senior '15 talent, showed he can be a red zone thraet.  DeShawn Littlejohn, Kyle Plattor and Michael Zepeda looked good in pass coverage.  If the chemistry is right on Saturday, they could punch a July ticket to College Station.  MORNING SCHEDULE: Cedar Park  (9AM) Dripping Springs (10AM) McCallum (11AM)

McCallum KnightsMcCallum Knights

The Knights haven't played a competitive match since their postseason loss to Lake Travis in 2011.  A bevy of youngsters surrounding senior QB Griffin Steusser comes to compete this weekend.  You may have heard of WR Willie Mays and RB Deon Baker.  But there's also Sabian Cannon, Chris Reyes and Carlos Rivera. To reclaim the district 26-4A, the Knights must get more athletic.  Their skill work this Summer will serve them well when playing district foes like LBJ, Travis and more athletic Crockett squad.  MORNING SCHEDULE: Dripping Springs (9AM), Stony Point (10AM), Cedar Park (11AM).

We can't help but root on the Tigers.  The humble over-achievers rose to the challenge every week, to post their most successful season ever in 2011.  They may be better this year.  QB Kyle Johnson returns for his third year behind center.  DB Michael McGregor is also back to steady a gritty tandem of corners and safties.  WR Lane Kelly Throw in former-LT project CJ Battle and scrappy Jobe Falcon - this team can score.  We hope to see Jim Donnelly get some snaps behind center,  MORNING SCHEDULE: McCallum (9am) Stony Point (10am) Cedar Park (11am)

Cedar Park TimberwolvesCedar Park Timberwolves

The Timberwolves say they are on a mission.  They want to be recognized as a threat to win the 7 on 7 title every year.  Traditionally a running power house, CP has the pieces to be a force on ground and air.  Last week, we saw QB Nate Grimm get the majority of the snaps.  CJ Udoye is building his legend as we speak.  He will challenge Rouse's Wesley Lewis for 25-4A's best receiver.  RB Bill Estevanott may miss this weekend's tourney, so players like Peter ManeikisLane Waller and Blake Bouffard could have a big Saturday.  MORNING SCHEDULE: Stony Point (9am), McCallum (10am), Dripping Springs (11am)

Pool D Predictions: We expect this to be a heated pool.  All four teams feel they will advance to the semifinals. The level of quarterback play makes this a fun group to watch.  McCallum has the QB with the best track record.  Stony Point possibly carries the most athletes of this group, while Cedar Park possesses the strongest.  Dripping Springs may be taken lightly, which would be a mistake.  We'll have scores, highlights, pics and shout outs from Pool D this weekend!

Traversing Central Texas at the speed of light to cover high school football doesn't come without a price.  We'd like to send a very special thanks to Next Care - Urgent Care, our new title sponsor.   Also to Al-Tex Electronics, our presenting sponsor!  Like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter.  We're Austin's Friday Night Fanstand!
