Lake Travis SQT Preview: Pool A

Last week's State Qualifying Tournament (SQT) was a huge hit at Round Rock.  Kudos to Cedar Ridge head coach Todd Ford, Westwood head coach Anthony Wood and the rest of the staff responsible for putting on a successful event.  Westwood and Lake Travis clinched spots in College Station's State tournament by finishing 1st and 2nd (Warriors beat the Cavaliers 26-15 in the final).   We now turn our attention towards this weekend's (June 2nd) SQT at Lake Travis.  Let's breakdown Pool A, which starts at 9am on Cavalier Track Stadium:
Lake Travis CavaliersLake Travis Cavaliers

The Cavaliers won't qualify to advance from Pool A, since they've already punched their College Station ticket.  That doesn't mean they won't try to win every game this weekend.  Zach Austin returned with a vegence, and looks to prove his his 18 TDs from a year ago wasn't a fluke.  Brock Kenyon has really worked hard this offseason, and looks like a future Division I athlete.   David Hourin, Jacob Pate and Vince Villigomez are earning valuable experience covering tough receivers this Summer.  They'll benefit in the Fall.  The Cavs draw early favorite-Belton in their 9am match.

Eastside Memorial PanthersCedar Ridge Raiders
We finally saw the Michael McCann to Ray Racine combo, and its as good as advertised.  Their calm confidence, teammed with the swagger of players like DB Juwan Cannon...the Raiders have a nice balance of talent.   Cedar Ridge will play Georgetown in the opening 9am game.  They'll play Belton in the following round at 10am.

Georgetown EaglesGeorgetown Eagles
The bad news is, we won't see any Brent Ellerbee this Summer.  His commitment to summer baseball is similar to Colten Shea's in 2011, so we'll have to wait for Fall.  The good news is: more Jake Hubenak.  Jake is working his way back to game shape, and could use the extra snaps this Summer.  WRs Ryan Bedford, Tiger Weston and Noah Douglas have already given us highlight footage this Summer.  But they fully plan to challenge for a State berth this weekend.  The Eagles draw Cedar Ridge at 9am, followed by Lake Travis at 10am.

TOC's Matt Stepp predicts that the Tigers will win it all this weekend in Lake Travis.  Future UT tight end Durham Smythe will be on display for our Austin-area DBs to contend with.  We'll get a glimpse of speedy Malik Jackson at QB.  Corner Ben Munoz is sticky, while Kyle Battle can man up the tallest receivers.  There are a bevy of returning skill players for the Tigers - making them a tough draw in Pool A.  Belton tackles Lake Travis to start the morning, with Cedar Ridge lined up at 10am.

POOL A Predictions: We like Georgetown's chances this round.  The Eagles have the depth of a 5A team at the skill positions, despite entering 4A play next season.  Mr. Stepp isn't wrong to think so highly of Belton.  Cedar Ridge will continue to play underdog as the area's newest 5A squad.

Traversing Central Texas at the speed of light to cover high school football doesn't come without a price.  We'd like to send a very special thanks to Next Care - Urgent Care, our new presenting sponsor.   Like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter.  We're Austin's Friday Night Fanstand!
