RR SQT Preview: Pool D

Pool D comprises of the most heavy hitting teams.  Three Austin-area powerhouses duke it out to survive round one.  Lake Travis has larger goals in mind (a 6th straight State title and first in 5A), but is expected to win it all in College Station's July 7 on 7 Championship.  Stony Point is excited to get their new regime of athletes up to speed, while Pflugerville is a darkhorse favorite to win 16-5A.  Throw in a scrappy Temple team, and Pool D will be among the morning's best.  They'll kick things off at 9 a.m. the Cedar Ridge practice turf field.  Here's our preview of the action:

Stony Point TigersStony Point Tigers (District 16-5A, Head Coach: Craig Chessher)

If you consider 2011 a step back for Stony Point, expect the Tigers to take two steps forward in 2012.  Their nucleus is still incredibly young, but they have solid senior leadership to back them up.  Perhaps 5A's best safety tandem will be on display with Wes Moore and Moose Ahrens.  LB Marcos Curry has gotten stronger/faster and QB Aidan Barrera has matured.  Coupled with the up-and-coming Jeremy Carr/Jordan Smith and the return of Xavier Mays, the Tigers enter 2012 as bounce-back candidates.

Fanstand Skill Player Watch List (Tigers):

QB Aidan Barrera
WR Jeremey Carr
DB Moose Ahrens
DB Wes Moore
LB Marcos Curry
WR Justin Gamble
TE Jordan Smith
DB Chris Njoku
LB Kyle Plattor
DB DeShawn Littlejohn
ATH Damian Lindley
RB Joe Morrero
RB Xavier Mays

Lake Travis CavaliersLake Travis Cavaliers (District 15-5A, Head Coach: Hank Carter)

'Maintain the Reign'.  'The Chase for Seis'.  Whatever you call it, the Cavaliers are focused on winning.  Lake Travis has won it all before in College Station in a 7 on 7 capacity - but they keep thing in perspective.  Skill season a blast, but winning isn't required.  This group stays in top shape all year long, so expect their conditioning to outstretch others later in the day.   With each state ring, the scrutiny gets tougher for our young Cavs.  QB Baker Mayfield was was of the State's top passers 2011, and he expects to increase those totals in '12.  A new receiver or two always emerges for LT during these sessions.

Fanstand Skill Player Watch (Cavaliers):

RB Shuan Nixon
QB Bake Mayfield
LB Luke Hutton
DB Brock Kenyon
WR Zach Austin
DB Hunter Streuling
DB Jacob Pate
WR Grant Foster
RB Romey Kelso
QB Nic Medina
LB Nico Escalante
QB Dominic DeLira

Pflugerville PanthersPflugerville Panthers (District 16-5A, Head Coach: George Herrmann)

We got our first glimpse of QB Blain Kruemcke and RB Adrian Dilworth at this time last year.  With a full year of Varsity stripes, these gentlemen return as leaders this Summer.  Along with DB Jay Byrd, they repreent the core of a Panther team with legit district title dreams.

Fanstand Skill Player Watch (Tigers):

RB Adrian Dilworth
QB Blain Kruemcke
DB Jay Byrd
QB Jacob Sowell
RB Jonathan Wallace
LB Demetrius Wilson
WR Caleb Horton
TE Noah Menke
DB Nick Bowens

Wildcats mascot photo.Temple Wildcats (District 8-5A, Head Coach: Mike Spradlin)

While SMU-commit Freddie Johnson won't be able to help his team in 7 on 7, he'll likely be on hand to watch his teammates battle Austin's best 5A schools. They'll return a junior QB that looked impressive during stretches on 2011.  There's a slew of skill players that could make things difficult on our Austin-area DBs.

Fanstand Skill Player Watch (Wildcats):

QB Zachary Allen
WR Stephonn Love
DB A'Keel Wilson
TE Erick Arizmendi
RB Rodney Alexander
RB Donvante McClellan
WR Jeremy Hemphill
QB Kevin Anderson
WR L'Darius Thomas

Pool D Projections: On pride and history, Lake Travis is an obvious favorite.  But the way the team is focused on their upcoming 5A venture, don't be surprised if the Cavs scale it back a notch this Summer.  We've long been fans of the upcoming senior skill groups from both Stony and P'ville.  Panthers get the edge on experience, while the Tigers get the nod for overall upside.  Temple won't slouch with Zachary Allen, but we'll roll with area-turf advantage.  We'll bring you scores, footage and interviews from Pool D on May 26th.
