In 2011, Stony Point and LBJ advanced to the Red Bull Gamebreakers National Tournamentin Dallas. Today (June 19th, Tuesday), two more teams will achieve that honor in San Marcos. We'll be covering several Austin-area teams, as they grace 5 Mile Dam Park's athletic complex. Below is a quick preview of the Austin-area teams we'll be following. Make sure to follow our Twitter account for the latest updates, and look for videos/pictures on our Facebook page. Special S/O to Tim Gardner and Keith Clingman for their hard work.
McNeil Mavericks - A team full of youngsters, the Mavs are ready to prove their worth. Expect both Colton Russell and Jordan Robinson to get time behind center. WRs Ryan Murphy and Nick Parinella are 16-5A all district performers who could tear up competition this weekend. LB Donnie Holmes and DB Zach Vaughan will contribute on both sides of the ball.
Manor Mustangs - The running Mustangs might well be the most athletic team attending Tuesday's Gamebreakers. Built for speed and endurance, W.A.M.M. fully feels they will go unbeaten in the tournament. QB Chris Johnson and Gerald Cannonier give the Mustangs options behind center. Skill players like Rodney Molette, Kelton Evans and Trevon Pradia make the team deep.
St. Michael's Crusaders - One of TAPPS finest once again gets their work in versus top flight UIL talent. This is why SMCA challenges for a State title year after year. Watch for Reed Carlton and Austin Grief in a tag-team QB/WR timeshare. Skill players Walker Drewett, Quin Goode, Scotland Butler and Marquell Davis will ensure teams don't take St. Michaels lightly.
Austin High Maroons - 'Loyal Forever', the Maroons were a late addition to the RBGB lineup. Featuring 2 capable QBs (Trey Blake, John Albert Mansour), many think they will challenge for a national spot. WR Zay Jones (may be at camp) and RB Quincy Reese lead a cast of skill players looking to improve on their last SQT showing. We're also expecting to see more of WR Desmond Barrett and RB Kendrick Price. LB Matthew Jones and Stephen Wineberger will get good practice playing 'stand up' defense. There's a cast of 'under the radar' Maroons like Eman Johnson, Don Seay, Hamlet Raetz and Thomas Craig who could increase their stock with solid performances during Gamebreakers.
Georgetown Eagles - Although they already clinched a State 7 on 7 tourney bid (during Belton SQT on June 8th), the Eagles are back at it on Tuesday. QB Jake Hubenak is using the offseason to get back into midseason form. The Eagles have an embarrasment of riches at skill positions. WR Ryan Bedford and Tiger Weston look like breakout candidates. Add Noah Douglas, Nick Kreider and Randy Knightner to the mix - Georgetown may be the deepest team as far as skill players are concerned. DB Brandon Boone will get some well-needed reps, as he continues his transistion from LB.
Pflugerville Panthers - In prep for a beastly upcoming 16-5A schedule, the Panthers continue their Summer tune up with Gamebreakers. QB Blain Kruemcke is ready to cash in on his potential during the tourney. Established skill players like RBs Adrian Dilworth/Brandon Woodward and WRs Caleb Horton/Preston Iloka, the Panthers are a scary squad. QB Jacob Sowell could sneak some playing time in today. DB Jay Byrd is a lockdown corner, expected to draw the other teams' #1 receiver each down.
Hendrickson Hawks - Representing Pflugerville, the Hawks are red hot. The move to 5A seems like less of an issue as the Summer wears on. With impressive showings at both the Round Rock/Belton SQTs, Hendrickson is ready to snatch a mega-tourney berth. Sophomore QB Xavier Conley is living up to the preseason hype, as WR Latrell Martin continues his ascension up the preseason ranks. DB Chance Waz is making a reputation as a 'pick artist', while we expect strong showings from Craig Roberts, Ryan Hamilton and the rest of HH's talented crew. They won't be at full strength, as RB Samaje Pereine continues his conditioning. We're also still awaiting the 2012 debut of DB Trai Mosley, who is questionable for Gamebreakers action.
Stony Point Tigers - Similar to Georgetown, the STP Tigers already have a July 20th date to attend the State 7 on 7 Tourney in College Station. It isn't enough for our fightin' Tigers, as they'll go for consecutive national tourney bids with Gamebreakers. WRs Jeremy Carr and Justin Gamble look like seasoned veterans out the shoot. Sophomore TE Jordan Smith is also maturing quickly. QBs Aidan Barrera and Damian Lindley gives the Tigers 2 great options at signal caller. Wes Moore and Christian Ahrens will get the help of Chris Njoku and DeShawn Littlejohn to form one of Gamebreakers' most feared defensive backfields. Michael Zapeda and Kyle Plattor are names you'll certianly hear more of as the Summer progresses. The re-emergence of Xavier Mays could be the STP's x-factor.
LBJ Jaguars - The champs are here. Last year's Austin-area regional winners will again compete for Gamebreakers glory. With a new head coach, we haven't seen much of the 'Swaguars' this Summer. Our first glimpse at their offense should be a dandy. Forcasted starting QB Aiden Kahn will serve as team coach today, still conditioning himself for the regular season. Reagan-transfer Lee'Anthony Dawson should see valuable time behind center...as he attempt to build chemistry with WR Andre Fresch and all-district ATH Randon Knotts. Speculations of Jeffrey Williams playing safety could be answered today, as the returning senior has bulked up this Summer. LBJ's preperation for defending their 26-4A title continues today.
