Returning 2013 All-District (15-5A)

The spotlight on 15-5A is at an all-time high.  Westlake's re-emergence as a State power puts 5A on notice.  Don't think that Lake Travis won't reload and challenge for a title in '13.  Bowie and Del Valle bring back a host of talent - same for Anderson/Austin High.  If Akins builds on 2012 progressions, the battle for the 4th playoff spot could come down to Week 10.  The following players were recognized last season as 'all district' by the coaches - and return for more in 2013.

Lake Travis CavaliersLake Travis Cavaliers

RB - Shuan Nixon ('14)

RB - Dominic Packer ('14)

RB - Romey Kelso ('14)

WR - Grant Foster ('15)

WR - Tyler Payne ('14)

WR - Chayce Pannell ('14)

OL - Garrett Stotts ('15)

DL - Zach Davies ('14) - 1st team all-state

DL - Feno Pearson ('15)

DL - Michael Islava ('14)

LB - Luke Hutton ('14)

LB - Hagen Patterson ('14)

CAVS QUICKY: Despite losing Baker, we think 2013 will be the best chance for the Cavs first 5A state title.  Coach Hank Carter turned injury lemons into experienced lemonade.  With 12 returning all-district nominees - half of them are offensive skill players.  The Summer is bound to reveal more potential weapons - but Foster/Payne/Pannell makes for a nice trio of receivers.  Not to mention the soft hands of Nixon/Packer/Kelso - we expect the scoring for Lake Travis to trend upwards in 2013.  Davies/Pearson could notch double digit sacks, while Patterson/Hutton is likely 15-5A's best 1-2 LB punch (with respect to Hudson/Hager).  Lastly, we feel Nixon will be back to prove that he (not Perine) is the most talented RB from the Austin-area.

Westlake Chaparrals Westlake Chaps

QB - Jordan Severt ('14)

WR - Patrick Elliott ('14)

TE - Zach Dansby ('14)

OL - Bobby Dwyer ('14)

DL - Luke Womack ('14)

LB - Hudson Hall ('15)

LB - Breckyn Hager ('15)

DB - Jack Meredith ('14)

CHAPS QUICKY: Last year's 3 point loss to Cedar Hill showed that the Chaps can still get it done.  Having Severt back behind center instantly makes Westlake a contender.  The defense improved over the course of the season, with the core returning in '13.  Hager/Hall are campus favorites, and two of 15-5A's top juniors.  Meredith/Dwyer return as seniors who have received all-district honors since their sophomore seasons.  Elliott/Dansby offer experience and Severt-chemistry that will result in inflated numbers this Fall.

Bowie Bulldogs Bowie Bulldogs

QB - Austin Eschenberg ('14)

RB - Steve Johnson ('15)

WR - Mac McGarah ('14)

WR - Jake Walton ('14)

OL - Andrew Alvarado ('14)

OL - Clayton Law ('14)

DB - Tyler Walker ('14)

BULLDOGS QUICKY: The strength is in the trenches for Bowie, returning the majority of their offensive line.  Anchored by Law/Alvarado, they'll clear the way for Eschenberg/Johnson.  Both Austin and Steve received valuable Varsity experience in '12, which puts them ahead of the curb next Fall.  Eschenberg's pass game will be sharpened this Summer (when he's not playing baseball) in 7 on 7.  We're excited to see how McGarah/Walton follow up their all-district junior campaigns.  Walker returns as the marquee name for Bowie's defense.

Del Valle Cardinals Del Valle Cardinals

OL - Sam De LaRosa ('14)

OL - Anthony Herrera ('15)

OL - Matt Bailey ('14)

OL - Pedro Rodriguez ('14)

LB - Khalid Taylor ('15)

LB - Darius Bender ('14)

DB - Vincent Wilson ('14)

CARDINAL QUICKY: Look at the offensive line.  Del Valle's skill players were able to have huge numbers because of the studs up front.  With four all-district honorees returning up front, we forsee another year of explosive DV offense.  We feel Khalid Taylor vaults to be one of the premiere linebackers in the district.  Darius Bender adds a playmaking deminsion to a DV defense that will be re-tooling to replace some senior leadership.  Wilson could be the key, as he'll have to patrol the backfield without Anthony Smith/Thomas Anderson.

Austin High Maroons Austin High Maroons

RB - Quin Goode ('14)

RB - Quincy Reese ('14)

OL - Daniel Laden ('14)

DL - Robert Navejas ('14)

LB - Mason Choate ('14)

DB - Chris Elizondo ('14)

DB - Desmon Barrett ('14)

MAROONS QUICKY: Quin and Quinta form the quickest running back duo in 15-5A.  Running behind mammoth Laden helps them get lost at the line of scrimmage, before darting out for big gains.  Both could approach 1K yards.  The defense losses some valuable seniors, but returns 4 key members in '13.  Elizondo and Barrett wiil be asked to tame some tough district QBs next year.  While Choate/Navejas will have to step up with the loss of Weinberger/Jones/Johnson.  There are several returning players who did not receive all-district praise (most notable, QB J.A. Mansour), which makes the Maroons a preseason favorite to make the playoffs.

Anderson Trojans Anderson Trojans

WR - Blake Allen ('14)

TE - Braden Buckman ('15)

DL - Raj Rajab ('14)

DL - Will Griffin ('15)

LB - Connor Gabriel ('14)

TROJANS QUICKIE: We certainly expect Anderson High to improve in 2013. Ending last year with a win was great for morale and momentum.  Coach Darin Shaw's second year should come with more success, mainly from the youngsters played in '12.  We feel Allen will be among the district's best wideouts (LBs, too).  Rajab and Griffin are two heavy hitters that make the Trojans competitive in the trenches.  Gabriel is an underrated athlete who will double as the team punter - while Braden is one of a handful of talented 2015 returnees for Anderson High.

Akins Eagles Akins Eagles
OL - Ben Salazar ('14)

EAGLES QUICKY: While the list isn't long, the Eagles aren't short on returning talent.  Salazar was an obvious pick for coaches, as he could start for any team in the district.   WIth defensive line talent being deeper across the district in 2013, Ben will play a vital role for the Eagles.  Keeping young Medrano upright, and opening running space for Cedric Williams and others.
