Clarification on APD Hike & Bike Trail and Greenbelt 24/7 Program

The Austin Police Department Park Unit began a 24/7 Patrol Pilot Program on June 1, 2013 that will run through Monday, September 30, 2013.  This program opened the Ann and Roy Butler Hike and Bike Trail, the Shoal Creek Greenbelt Trail and the Johnson Creek Greenbelt Trail to 24-hour use to bicyclists only.  Any pedestrians on the trails violating curfew (between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.) will be subject to misdemeanor citation.
Officers will patrol three site locations:
  • Butler- 2101  Veterans Dr. (Mopac Blvd./Stratford north and south bank)  to  60 S. Pleasant Valley Rd (Longhorn Dam)
  • Johnson Creek-2001 Enfield to 2101 Veterans Dr.
  • Shoal Creek-1400 W.38th St. to 707 W. Cesar Chavez St
The Austin City Council has approved the public use of designated trails and the greenbelt for 24-hours a day for bicyclists. City Ordinance:http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/edims/document.cfm?id=184852
APD’s goal is to ensure public safety and to provide police visibility as members of our community utilize the trails as a safe option of transportation during lower visibility hours.
